Species Diversity
"What is it?.....Do we have it?......How do we manage for it?”
Coastal regions of BC are blessed with a good mix of native tree species. Maintaining or even enhancing this diversity is currently viewed as one of the important components of ”forest resiliency”. As well, it is widely accepted, that the establishment and maintenance of a species mix may help buffer the possible negative impacts of climate change.
Silviculturists have been targeted as the professionals to deliver this healthy mix of well adapted species at the stand level and across the managed landscapes.
The following Tree Species Diversity questions represent a few of the topics guest speakers will focus on at our next winter workshop:
How is tree species diversity being tracked?
What are the indicators of successful diverse species deployment?
How are stocking standards being used or proposed to promote a diversity of well adapted tree species across the landscape?
Are we using and/or promoting flexibility in species composition and density –i.e. broadleaves, or even exotics?
What is being planned to support species deployment to address climate change and native species vulnerability?
Are there different approaches to managing for species diversity practiced on crown, private and US lands that we can share and learn from?
The intent is for CSC participants to gain a greater understanding of the options and thoughts behind tree species diversity and the tools to manage for it in Coastal BC.
