CSC – Summer 2008 June 25th & 26th - Chilliwack Welcome
Managing our Forests for Resilience through Silviculture
Over the years, BC forest practitioners developed management strategies and practices that reflected, more or less, constant environmental conditions. For the past several years, however, the notion that climate change might impact our forest environment has led to concerns over the viability of established practices; will our new forests be resilient enough to survive environmental conditions of the future? How should we change current silviculture strategies and practices to make our new forests more resilient? These are very real and critical questions.
This year’s Coastal Silvicultural Committee Summer Workshop will borrow on the theme of the 2008 Southern Interior Silvicultural Committee winter workshop and look at current coastal practices in light of our changing climate and ask the critical question – what should we be doing differently to make our forests more resilient? Tour stops, presentations, and discussions will focus on past, current, and future silvicultural practices that deal with and include genetic management, FSP standards, species selection, nursery practices, seedling performance, site preparation, vegetation management, hard wood and mixed wood management, forest health issues, and invasive species. The program will also include updates on surveys, the Forest Investment Account, the direction of fertilization under the Coast Action Plan, and recent changes in safety standards.
